Greetings readers! Your local Lycan, Hakurai the Vircolac, here with this weeks review. Today, I’ll be discussing Kingdom, a historical action manga set in the era of the 500 year war in China: The Warring States Period.
The story centers around Shin, a boy of nearly the lowest social standing with great physical potential but lacking in… conventional intellect. Circumstances lead to the loss of his friend Hyou, a perfect look alike of Ei Sei, the boy who is heir to the throne of the state of Qin. From there, he vows to continue on with his and Hyou’s dream, and aims to be the Greatest General under the Heavens.
Along the way, he encounters others who will be pivotal to his growth. I mean, how many aspiring Generals do you know who pick up a legendary assassin only known in stories passed among men? Kyou Kai (see above pic) is AMAZING! The more you read up on her past and witness her achievements, the more you fall in love with the character who dances through the battlefield. Am I making it obvious she’s my personal favorite? Fine… I guess we can discuss Ei Sei, the King who (ironically) becomes a dear friend to Shin, or Ten a mountain tribe member who aids in their escape early in the series. The friendship of Ten, Ei Sei, and Shin plucks at the heart strings. Not only is it tested throughout the manga, but it’s portrayed in a manner that makes it real. Their tears will have you swearing there’s something in your eye, their triumph makes you feel like you share in the accomplishment. It was almost as if I could see a bit of me in them, I think that’s a part of what draws me *and hopefully you* to Kingdom.
His path is certainly not without hurdles, as rising up from a commoner to a General is unheard of, but his adventures serve to mold him. If you’re a fan of action, you’ll definitely love this series for its steady stream of life or death battles! Maybe you thirst for knowledge? No worries, the events and characters are fashioned after actual events. Kingdom definitely has something for everyone, finely woven into a tale that keeps readers longing for more. Go ahead and check it, then try to tear yourself away to catch my next review. See you then!
