Happy Free Comic Book Day!

Hi guys, your friendly neighborhood Nerd here, and I know I normally post on Friday but I really wanted to wait so I could tell you, the readers personally… HAPPY FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! And I know what you may be thinking, really Bobbo? But relax, if you already haven’t found out, this is my favorite holiday and I want it to be yours as well. The greatest thing about this day is that it’s just what it says, Free Comic Book Day, and that’s the main question I’ve getting. People will always ask well, what is Free Comic Book Day? And you guys know how sarcastic I am so I reply with “Exactly the words you just said.”

But really for the ones who don’t know I want to take the time to get you guys on board with this holiday… And yes, its a holiday, we may not have extravagant meals, but we do have gifts. And the main gifts are what you may think, the comics.This day was founded in 2002 by Joe Feilds, who saw that the movie industry was revitalizing the comic book world and thought how were we going to give back to the loyal readers and get new ones all at the same time? So a very cool publisher by the name of Jim Valentino suggest, why not have FREE comic book day, and that’s how the day was born. The day has always coincided with a blockbuster comic book movie premier and its always been great. But the day is more than that. It gives us, the readers a chance to feel appreciated and also a chance to expose more people a glimpse into our little worlds that we hide in, and for people who think they’re not into comics it gives them the chance to explore something new. For the youth of today, I feel as they have never gotten the chance to sit down in the store and read comics all day and get wrapped up into the worlds that have been created by these writers and eloquently mastered and illustrated by the artist and given to us as this perfect package we call a comic book. So they get that chance to see what it’s like to be engulfed into something else besides their phones. To see the joy on a kid’s face that has picked up a comic for the first time and discover a whole new world that just opened up to him is amazing, and I live to give that look on their faces.

This year will mark the 13th annual Free Comic Book Day. With that the have a TON of comics coming out, click the link to see ” The comics” and there is a great lineup this year. One I’m most excited about is Future’s End. It’s a Batman Beyond story, and I grew up with that show so it makes me smile to see that people are still wanting this and they give us what we are asking for. Here’s the thing FCBD brings us all together as fans and gives us kinda a mini con if you will and we get to geek out with people we don’t know and talk about the things we love. Now we CAN’T forget about the shops, these are the ones doing all of this for us. They are paying for these free comics so we can enjoy them and we give them support and exposure and they love to give to the community. We all do our part in making this holiday a success, and without one the whole thing would fall apart. Say if they didn’t publish the books we’d never get them, or if the comic shop didn’t participate, those great comics would never get out and we wouldn’t see them, or what if WE just never showed up? The comics would never be read and the stores would be out of a good bit of  profit they normally would have needed. We have to support each other and make this day a success.
