… hey, what are you all doing here? This weeks manga review? Silly readers, that’s not until… *checks calender* … my secretary is so fired.

[Wolfs down last of pepperoni garlic crust goodness and clears throat.]

Hi everyone! Welcome to this weeks Block Mangafesto! I was doing my usual catch-all-the-updates thing and realized I was completely caught up. What did I do then you ask? GO BACK AND READ THEM ALL AGAIN. Okay maybe not ALL of them, because you see the way my bills are setup… *ahem* anyway, I fell in love with a few titles once more. Among those titles, were “The Breaker” and “The Breaker: New Waves”, but the latter is the follow-up story and would be chock-full of spoilers. Can’t rob you of all the juicy details now can I?

The_Breaker_(manhwa)_1_volume_Daiwon_C.I.

The Breaker is a manhwa that introduces you to the world of martial arts (Murim) through the fortune/misfortune of Shi-Woon Yi. He was your typical kid plagued by bullying with no *real* means of defending himself. One day, he stumbles upon Chun-Woo Han (pictured above) going to town on some thugs and begs him to be his teacher (oh the irony that will ensue). Reluctant to take on a disciple, especially considering his “position” as you will find out about soon enough, Chun-Woo tries to deter  Shi-Woon by stating he’ll teach him IF he jumps off a particular bridge. What’s the answer when someone tells you to jump off a bridge? Apparently, *jumps*.

As the series progresses, you learn that Shi-Woon Yi’s teacher (and now homeroom teacher as well) is not only a member of Murim, but THE legendary Nine Arts Dragon.  What’s a Nine Arts Dragon? Well, aside from a super badass title, it’s the name bestowed upon the dude who can kick your ass 6 ways from Sunday… in essence. On top of that, we come to find out Shi-Woon Yi is equipped with protagonists will! The passive ability that almost all main characters share to never give up. The teacher and disciple face quite a few problems but they form an almost unbreakable bond in the process… almost (BWAHAHAHAHA CLIFFHANGERS GALORE!) I’m evil, but you still love me for it.

While The Breaker is action packed and full of feels, you are not given much opportunity to bond with the characters due to minimal amount of background that is given. Only person you really learn a lot about *initially* is Chun-Woo Han, but what you learn is mind blowing. Oh, and the ridiculous power up Shi-Woon Yi gets. I won’t reveal too much, but just know he practically becomes a chibi Nine Arts Dragon. However, you’d have to read this AND The Breaker: New Waves to fully grasp how amazing the characters are. So go ahead, immerse yourself in the world of Murim. Just in case you don’t survive, I’m posting a link at the bottom of this review for you to sign over all you own in advance. Stop looking at me like that, I’m kidding…
