Block Mangafesto: Tokyo Ghoul

Hello again! Welcome to a new review on the Mangafesto. I believe folks will like this one.

“Tokyo Ghoul” is a manga written and drawn by Sui Ishida. It has very dark overtones; it’s more or less a horror manga with fantasy thrown into the mix. A very good mix, actually.
It follows the story of a college student named Ken Kaneki who is unwittenly lured into a trap by a girl named Rize Kamishiro who reveals herself to be a ghoul–a humanlike creature that craves human flesh and blood. She critically injures him but before finishing him off, she herself is killed by a falling steel beam. Kaneki is saved by the efforts of the doctors and emergency surgery only to find out that the organs used to replace his damaged ones came from Rize’s body.

He begins to feel odd and develops ghoul-like tendencies (like craving the taste of human flesh and cannot eat “human” food as it tastes absolutely horrid). As his rationality begins to wear down, Kaneki struggles with being a half human/ghoul hybrid, keeping his ghoul side a secret, and fighting against it while attempting to live as a normal human again. He also must deal with the ghoul society and the conflicting factions within it.

Currently, it is at 139 chapters and it also has an anime adaptation which premiered in July. The adaptation has 8 episodes so far. I picked this one up on a whim and immediately fell in love with it. I’m a horror fan, especially Japanese horror. The artwork is pretty to look at and the story gets really interesting as you read further into the manga. You’ll learn more about the ghouls who appear as well as Rize Kamishiro who is a like more than she appears, but I won’t spoil it.
