A new review! Hope you guys enjoy this review; it’s one of my favorites and just in time for Halloween!
“Dorohedoro” is a fantasy manga written and illustrated by Q Hayashida (if the name is familiar, she is known for the manga “Maken X Another”). This manga was actually recommended to me by a friend of mine last year and we cosplayed as our favorite characters. Anyway–
The story follows a character named Kaiman who doesn’t have any memories before his human head was changed into a reptile’s head by a “magic user” (magic users are individuals who are able to produce magic smoke from their fingertips–or in two characters’ cases, from their mouth). In his search to find out who transformed him, accompanied by a girl named Nikaido, they track down several magic users as he chomps down on their heads. Within his mouth, however, lies a second man who appears and stares at the individual before saying “Not you”. After Kaiman pulls them back out, he asks the question: “What did the guy inside my mouth say?”
“Dorohedoro” is a very interesting read and I’ve really enjoyed it. There are backstories about multiple characters, such as Kaiman and Nikaido. The plot gets progressively darker–it already is but ups the ante later–once you get deeper into the manga. It has its lighthearted and comedic moments as well. Nudity and extreme violence are abound along with plot twists that make you think back then say “oh I see”. You will also find out more of the magic users and their abilities (one supposedly can stop time but it’s a myth) plus the two worlds that the story takes place–Hole and the Magic User World.
Currently, it is ongoing and has 128 chapters to read. I found out that it will be ending soon (when the exact date is, I’m not sure but I will find out); it makes me sad so I’m hoping it ends on a good note.
Thanks for reading!
