Summer Wars is a collaboration of Mamorua Hosada and Madhouse Productions, it’s more in the style of Sci-fi Anime film that goes throughmany levels. So it’s about an 11th grader Kenji Kosio and his crazy 4 days during the summer with  Natsuki Shinohara. IT all begins as most wild summer stories do, when a girl asks you to do her a favor. But I’m getting ahead of myself a little.

So in this time we have introduced something to the world known as OZ, it’s at best the only way I can explain it is if Facebook, Amazon and Apple did a triple DBZ Fusion dance and birthed a MMO. This place has and does everything. From keeping up with friends, to gaming, to paying taxes and keeping up with your medical records. It is immense and was integrated with all of our everyday lives. You can check it on most electronic devices. But Kenji and his friend,Takashi Sakuma got a part-time summer  jobs working as coders for OZ. They were all set for the summer, and here is where that girl I was telling you about comes in.

So Natsuki approaches the two with a “job” as well, she asked one of them to accompany her for the next four days to her Great-Grandmother’s 90th Birthday celebration. But it was not anything that Kenji expected. He is thrust into this crazy situation where Natsuki tells her great-grandmother, Sakae Jinnouchi, that he is her fiance and a whole other stories so she would not break her heart. And to top it off, asisde from the family drama he has to deal with someone has hacked his account and goes on a rampage in OZ and he is the most wanted person in one night.

This is where the story really picked up. We discover that it’s not a who but a what. It was a super-virus AI called LoveMachine, and boy was this a bad bug.

It all comes down to stopping LoveMachine, before he sinks the world into chaos and turmoil. IT gets crazy and we all have to ban together and stop him. All the while dealing with the turmoil it has already caused in the real world.

To not give away so much of the story, it goes through a plethora of ranges, from action-packed, to drama and tragedy. All the while showing you what we can all do if we stand as one. It to me shows a deeper level of meaning. We live in a world today that isn’t too much different from the land of OZ. We do everything and put everything online. If this was something to actually happen today, would we be able to pull it together such as them? Also it shows you the true importance of family, tradition and love in the Japanese culture and how things are handled in a time of tragedy, and how the eldest of us can see the clearest when we are trying to rely so heavily on what we have come so accustom to.

But with all of that said, this was a great movie. It reached me on so many different levels and pushed the thought of how much do I rely on the internet and everyday life and what would we do if it all went chaotic? But this is a must-see, I would actually put this up there with such Anime films like Spirited Away.
