Parasyte is a manga created by Hitoshi Iwaaki that ran from 1988 to 1995 and consists of 10 volumes. It has elements of body horror plus science fiction for those who enjoy the genre (like myself). The art style isn’t much to look at but it was a really great read as the story progresses.

It starts out slow but picks up speed once the main character, 17 year old Shinichi Izumi, is almost infected by a worm-like creature (called a parasite) which attempts to enter his brain through his ear; the creature fails and burrows into his right arm instead and Shinichi is able to stop the creature from travelling up towards his brain. Because of this, Shinichi and the creature keep their intellect and personality seperate.

The creature begins to call itself “Migi” (the Japanese term for ‘right’) soon after as it teaches itself the human language through the use of books. Attempting to learn of their strange situation, the two gradually form a strong bond working together to survive while encountering and battling other parasites. Shinichi feels the need to battle other parasites–they kill humans as sustenance–while asking Migi for help. This gives the two the upper hand due to the fact Shinichi’s brain is still intact.

It’s 64 chapters long and the ending will not disappoint you. There is also an anime that follows the manga but in a modern setting plus two live action films.
Thanks for reading!
